What to look for — and what we do about it
|
| Carpenter ants | The largest ant you are likely to see in a Delaware home, up to about 5/8 inch and usually solid black. They do not eat wood, they hollow it out to nest inside it, almost always starting where there has been a leak. Sawdust-like piles, a rustling inside a wall, or large black ants indoors in winter all mean the nest is already in your structure. We locate the indoor nest and the outdoor parent colony, treat both, and show you the moisture problem feeding them.

| Odorous house ants | Small, dark, and moving in steady trails across counters, along baseboards and under sinks. Crushed, they give off a faint rotten-coconut smell. Their colonies carry several queens and respond to store-bought sprays by splitting into more of them, which is why this ant so often gets worse after a do-it-yourself attempt. We bait with non-repellent products that workers carry back to every queen.

| Pavement ants | Small and dark brown to black, usually noticed first around driveway seams, patio slabs and sidewalk cracks, with little piles of excavated soil beside them. They nest under concrete and get in through slab edges and expansion joints, turning up in kitchens and basements, sometimes as a sudden indoor swarm in spring. We treat the slab edge and perimeter and place bait directly on the active trails.

| Citronella ants | Yellowish, with a faint lemon scent when disturbed. Most homeowners never see them until a swarm of winged ones appears in the basement in spring, which is alarming and easy to mistake for termites. They nest in soil against the foundation and do not damage the structure, but a swarm is always worth identifying before you assume the worst. We confirm what you actually have before anything is treated, then treat the foundation soil.

| Acrobat ants | Light brown to black, with a heart-shaped rear section they raise over the body when disturbed. They follow wiring, pipes and utility lines indoors, and nest in moisture-damaged wood and foam insulation. Finding them inside usually means there is a water problem behind the wall as well as an ant problem. We trace the trail back to the nest, treat it, and point out the damage that let them in.

| Little black ants | Very small, shiny and jet black, usually in long trails along brickwork, mortar joints, mulch beds and woodwork. They nest in masonry cracks and outdoor voids in very large numbers and forage indoors for anything sweet or greasy. Harmless individually, but the colonies are large and persistent. We treat the perimeter and place bait at the harborage points outside so the trails stop at the source.

Seeing winged ants indoors? Those may be carpenter ant swarmers or termite swarmers, and the treatments are not remotely the same. Ants, termites and mice are all part of what we handle year-round, call us and we will identify what you have before anything is treated.
